Discuss what a hospital is and describe the different types of hospitals. Give examples of the types of hospitals in your respective community, and how these hospitals impact community member’s ability to receive care.

Hospital, an institution that is built, staffed, and equipped for the diagnosis of disease; for the treatment, both medical and surgical, of the sick and the injured; and for their housing during this process. The modern hospital also often serves as a centre for investigation and for teaching.” (Piercey et al, 2015)
Hospitals evolved from long before even the Romans who in 100BC established hospitals to care for the Roman Legion’s wounded soldiers, when people who were in need of care were separated from the general populace to a house, in some cases on the outskirts of town.
Hospitals can be divided into various classes based on its funding: they are, Government/Public owned facilities, Corporation owned (for profit) and Not-For-Profit owned by Individual or Organizations (charities, religious houses, socities).
There are different types of hospitals: The general hospital, The Health Care Center, Specialized hospital, Teaching hospitals. Another variation of hospitals are Clinics (small versions of hospitals- in size and capacity), Hospice (same level of care as hospitals, but where terminally ill people are taken).
Hospitals have both inpatients (those who stay in the hospital for treatment for varying lengths of time) and outpatients (those who receive treatment then leave immediately after, or those treated with ambulance and seen by a care specialist). In hospitals, there are two levels of acuity of care, the higher level of acuity is the Intensive Care Unit and lower level of acuity of care is Non-Intensive Care Unit (both can be long or short term) (Department of Health, 2015)
The biggest hospital in my community in Surulere, Lagos Nigeria is a teaching hospital called Lagos University Teaching Hospital, this is the place I was born.
Due to the staff of seasoned Nurse-teachers, Veteran Surgeons, Professors, Droves of Residents and so on plus the high amount of cases, practicals and exposure they get, the care given there is great as per reports of success I have been privy to see and hear.
Their biggest issues are funding (corollary of which is outdated tech, less training on recent maneuvers) and bureaucratic lags (appointments take forever, departments do not communicate, Specialized units are almost “independent” in their operations for examply radiology uses different sets of registration and documentation, emergency rooms are not run smoothly).
According to (Yordanov, 2017), the cons of using teaching hospitals for patients are, A. New Doctors (students at work, who might be inexperienced but must do their rounds. B. For patients with modesty issues, one can not pick the person (s) who cares for one. C. Being an inpatient when new intakes come may mean, one’s Doctors may be new to techniques.
The last two decade of 20th century brought an influx of investors and start-ups of for-profit private clinics and hospitals, so by year 2000, they outnumbered the government/public and not-for-profit hospitals.
These relatively new private hospitals in my community are usually on both ends of the spectrum in terms of size and number of beds, there are those that can take as small as 5 beds and there are those that take as many as 150 beds. These hospitals bridge the gap in services for not rendered by the teaching hospital, due to the large population, they have grown in capacity, with state and country wide ventures for example Lagoon Hospitals, Premier Specialist Medical Center, Reddinton, R-Jolad Hospital, EKO hospital and so on. These hospitals have private patients (who pay out of pocket), Insured, HMO card holders et cetra.
